Rainbow Revisited was recorded over the course of two sessions in 2019, between Ntuli’s grand 2018 epic Exiled and last year’s shimmering Blk Elijah & The Children of Meroë.
Her piano and nearly wordless vocals are so achingly vulnerable it’s hard to imagine them in any other context. The fact that her new album, Rainbow Revisited, is better off without one of the best players on the planet is a testament to Ntuli’s artistry.
“In fact, Shabaka was supposed to add some clarinet because he was in LA at the time,” she tells us over Zoom from her home in Johannesburg. Thandi Ntuli didn’t know this was gonna be pretty much a solo record.
